Why Does My Skin Break Out When I Travel?

Why Does My Skin Break Out When I Travel?

Summer means vacation season, which can also mean long hours in planes, trains, or automobiles. Spending time in the pressurized environment of an airplane cabin will suck all the moisture right out of your skin, which leaves your skin completely dehydrated.

You may also be traveling to places that have a very different environment than back home. Maybe your summer getaway spot has air that is much more humid or drier than what you're used to at home. On top of all that, travel can cause added anxiety which increases stress hormones. Higher stress levels can cause inflammation and acne breakouts.

We're here to help you take the skin care stress out of your travel plans. Read on for our favorite travel-sized skin care products, plus the steps to follow that will ensure more comfortable travel for you and your skin.

1. Prepare for travel by moisturizing.

Whether you are traveling by plane, car, or train, be sure to moisturize pre-travel. Our Calming Bio-Lipid Repair Creme weighs in at only 2 ounces, so it's perfect for taking on the plane with you in your carry-on luggage. Even though the jar may be small, this moisturizer packs a big punch. Luxuriously rich, this extra-strength moisturizer is formulated for extremely dry, sensitive skin. The calming plant extracts in this moisturizing cream will soothe the visible redness that often occurs during travel.

2. Wear your SPF.

You are still subjected to UV rays through windows, so even if your summer vacation plans don't include the beach, be sure to protect your skin throughout your travels. We always recommend our Solar Defender SPF 30 Sunscreen to our patients for daily use.

3. Stay hydrated.

Drink lots of water and keep your skin properly hydrated. Our Hyaluronic Moisture Boost Serum is carry-on friendly, and a few spritzes twice a day after cleansing will lock in moisture, giving your skin a youthful appearance.

It can be hard to find healthy, hydrating foods while you're traveling, so plan ahead and pack moisture-rich fruits and veggies to snack on such as watermelon, cucumbers, and bell peppers. Bring a refillable water bottle plus some coconut water to ensure proper hydration. Drinking plenty of water will keep you from getting too dehydrated which ultimately will help prevent breakouts.

4. Give your eyes some love.

If your travel plans include international flights or long hours in an airplane, it's important to give the delicate skin around your eyes some love. Our Eye Perfection Therapy anti-aging eye serum features advanced peptide technologies that help reduce the appearance of the signs of aging including fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles. Even though you may be tired after that long flight, your eyes won't tell.

5. Take care of your skin post-travel.

Once you're home, be sure to use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer to clean and rejuvenate skin. We suggest you "prescribe it for yourself" and save money with our 5 essential products kit. A favorite among our patients, the kit offers significant savings on our best anti-aging skin care products including our Total Skin Moisturizer, Oil-Free Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer, Total Facial Cleansing Gel, Total Antioxidant Facial Serum, and Eye Perfection Therapy.

Wherever you go this summer, we wish you safe travels and healthy skin!
